A fatal car crash in the Florida Keys on Tuesday morning caused traffic delays and caused officials to close three schools.
The crash, which happened around 5:30 a.m. in Key Largo, also knocked down some power lines, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said. It also caused major traffic delays on U.S. 1, which is the only main road through the island chain.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating, but has released few details about the crash.
Disruption from the crash led the Monroe County School District to close Key Largo School, Plantation Key School and Coral Shores High School for the day, spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.
“A road closure and subsequent power outages caused by the crash mean potentially lengthy disruptions to those school’s ability to operate,” Herrin said.
