The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado in the Atlanta metro area Monday as a disturbance brought scattered yet severe storms.
On Twitter, NWS Atlanta followed up a tornado warning from early Monday morning with a post saying, “This is now a CONFIRMED tornado. Please take shelter if you are in the path of this storm.”
The threat of significant weather, including flash flooding and additional tornadoes, will last through the afternoon as damaging winds greater than 60 mph, large hail, locally heavily rainfall and frequent lightning were listed as the primary threats, NWS said.
A tornado ripped through Mississippi Sunday, blowing the roofs off homes and tearing down trees and power lines.
Another system will threaten the region Tuesday into Tuesday night as well.
This is a developing story.
