Tropical Storm Elsa Weakens Over Northern Florida

Tropical Storm Elsa was weakening as it traveled over northern Florida, the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm was about 105 miles west of Jacksonville and moving toward the north near 14 mph, according to the NHC’s 2 pm Wednesday July 7 update. A turn toward the north-northeast is expected Wednesday evening, followed by a faster northeastern motion by late Thursday.

Elsa will move over Georgia on Wednesday night, over South Carolina early Thursday, over North Carolina later Thursday, and move near or over the mid-Atlantic coast on Friday.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 50 mph.

All warnings have been discontinued south of the Suwanne River, while a storm surge warning is still in effect for the west coast of Florida from the Suwanne River to the Aucilla River.

A tropical storm warning is in effect from the Suwannee River to the Ochlockonee River and Mouth of St. Marys River, Georgia to Little River Inlet, South Carolina.

A tropical storm watch is in effect for North of Little River Inlet, South Carolina to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds, Chesapeake Bay south of North Beach and the tidal Potomac south of Cobb Island, and Delaware Bay south of Slaughter Beach.
