A house fire in rural Pike County, Georgia, killed two toddlers on Saturday, authorities said.
The fire in Molena, about 60 miles south of Atlanta, was accidental in nature, according to investigators with the Georgia insurance and fire commissioner’s office. The fire began early in the morning and was quickly extinguished, but it was too late for the children.
“Upon arrival, investigators determined that the fire began immediately in the entrance of the home’s second bedroom,” the insurance commissioner’s office said in a bulletin. “The fire was contained to the room of origin and burned an area of approximately five feet.”
The family was planning a party for the babies, who had just celebrated their first birthday, according to local news reports.
