An Alabama jury has decided that Dollar General stores must pay almost $2 million to a delivery worker who was injured when a ramp collapsed at a store.
Driver Jason Agee in 2019 was pushing a rolling cart full of bottled water – which weighed about 1,000 pounds – up a metal ramp at the store entrance in Mobile when the ramp collapsed on loose gravel, causing Agee to fall, according to local news reports. He sustained a torn rotator cuff, a broken toe and other injuries that required surgery, his lawyers said, AL.com reported.
It’s the latest safety concern for Dollar General stores in recent years. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration since 2017 has cited Tennessee-based Dolgen Corp. for more than $15 million in fines due to safety violations at its stores around the country. The violations have included exits blocked by boxes and merchandise, along with fire hazards and other problems. Workers have complained about conditions at stores.
The corporation has raised worker pay in the last three years and it announced last week that it would invest $100 million this year to increase hours for many employees in an effort to keep them on board. That should lead to improvements in store standards, shelf-stocking and product availability, the company’s chief financial officer has said in news reports.
