A former Alfa insurance agent in Georgia pleaded guilty Wednesday to using more than $200,000 from one policyholder to cover other expenses, including the premium payments for other insureds.
Jeremy Lasseter, of Warner Robins, Georgia, near Macon, was indicted in May and was set to face trial in September. He agreed to plead guilty this week and could face as much as 30 years in prison, a $1 million fine, forfeiture of assets, and $221,515 in restitution, according to the plea agreement filed Wednesday in federal court in Georgia.
“Defendant would tell D.W. to make payments in various amounts, sometimes instructing her to make the checks payable to him, rather than Alfa, or to provide cash payments, telling her this was better for tax purposes,” the plea agreement explained. “Defendant now admits and agrees that between March 1, 2020, and September 7, 2023, he carried out a scheme to get money from federally insured financial institutions using material false and fraudulent representations to D.W. with the intent to defraud.”
The insured, unnamed in court records, held several insurance policies with Alfa, through Lasseter, the plea agreement shows.
Alfa, based in Alabama, also writes property and life insurance in Georgia and Mississippi. A company spokesperson said Lasseter was terminated in 2023 for unrelated reasons, but a review of Lasseter’s book of business prompted Alfa to notify the Georgia insurance commissioner’s office. “Alfa has fully cooperated with law enforcement throughout the investigation and is eager to see justice served,” reads a statement from Alfa.
Lasseter began work at Alfa in 2017, after working at New York Life Insurance and at State Farm Insurance in Georgia, according to his Linkedin page. Since 2023 he has worked as a sales manager at a car dealership. Lasseter had been appointed with multiple carriers in recent years, and was licensed in property, casualty, accident and life lines, the Georgia agent license verification site shows.
A sentencing date has not been set.
