The father of longtime NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin died from a house fire and his mother was left in critical condition after the blaze consumed the couple’s home near Charlotte.
Multiple news outlets reported that the 3,700-square-foot house in Stanley, North Carolina, owned by Denny Hamlin’s real estate firm, was half-engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived Sunday evening. Hamlin’s parents managed to escape the structure, but 75-year-old Dennis, who had already suffered from health problems, succumbed at the hospital, The Athletic reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Firefighters were able to save some valuables from the house, Al.com reported.
The fire is one of a few tragedies that have hit professional athletes and their families in the Carolinas in the last few years.
Earlier this month, a Cessna jet carrying retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and his family crashed near the runway in Statesville. In 2023, an explosion in Mooresville, caused by a natural gas leak, destroyed a home owned by NFL player Caleb Farley, killing his father. In July of 2025, former Major League Baseball player Chase Childers drowned while trying to rescue swimmers at a South Carolina beach.
