Fountains, Pipes Freeze as Las Vegas Endures Record Chill

Chilly Las Vegas is shivering beneath a blanket of cold the likes of which it hasn’t seen for a decade.

A fountain at a casino east of the Las Vegas Strip froze into a four-tiered ice sculpture and landscaping pipes in some neighborhoods burst, flooding roads and creating automotive skating rinks that sent cars skidding to curbs. No serious damage or injuries were reported Monday.

“As long as people remember to shut their sprinklers off, they’ll be alright,” said Charlie Schlott, a National Weather Service meteorogist in Las Vegas, where the unusual cold snap has sent overnight temperatures plunging into the low 20s.

Sunday only warmed up to 39 degrees at McCarran International Airport, setting a record for the lowest maximum temperature ever for a Jan. 14. The previous record was 42 degrees in 1997.

With skies clear and sunny, temperatures reached the mid-40s on Monday at McCarran, but Schlott said overnight temperatures were expected to drop below 32 degrees at least through Thursday. Daytime highs might get into the 50s on Wednesday, he said.

There was little chance the cold temperatures would reach to the record 11 degrees set on Dec. 23, 1990, Schlott said.
