As usual the facts regarding the coverage avialable is wrong. Lloyd’s & some other E&S markets provide an HO3 & dwelling fire policies in lava zone I & II; however, they do not cover lava flow in lava zone I.

And for you guys in Florida, you’ll be happy to know that Universal P&C is offereing personal lines products on an admitted paper at substantially lower premium than the HPIA.

Hawaii Revised Statutes require all insurance firms to provide a standard form fire policy and prohibit them from excluding perils not covered by a New York policy set down in 1943. New Yorkers in 1943 did not think to exclude a fire caused by lava flow.

Aloha 808, thanks for giving us another example of how Universal P & C is a train wreck waiting to happen.

The information presented in this article is not correct. By law all residents of Hawaii with qualified homes can get insurance in all areas. Additionally, no insurance firm may decline a claim owing to fire caused by a lava flow. These laws are part of Hawaii Revised Statutes.

Not only was I quoted out of context, but the information in the article is not at all valid.
My property IS NOT at the “base” of a volcano and there are, in fact, many subdivisions much closer to the actual LAVA FLOWS that are in zones 2 and 3. The entire issue is being reviewed by the State.
