April 19, 2011

Walnut Creek, Calif.-based Civil Service Employees Insurance Group (CSE Insurance), is accepting applications for its 2011 CSE Youth Scholarship Program, an annual essay competition designed to promote awareness of driver safety among young people. This is the 15th year CSE has sponsored the program, which is open to eligible high school seniors in Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah who are children of public employees.

A total of $12,000 in scholarships will be awarded to winning entrants based on their essays of 500 words or less that discuss ways in which the teenage automobile accident rate can be reduced. Essays are evaluated on originality, practicality of offered ideas and written skill.

The competition is divided into three geographic regions: Northern California, Southern California, and Arizona/Nevada/Utah. In each region, CSE will offer one $1,500 scholarships for first place, one $1,000 scholarship for second place, and one $500 scholarship for third, fourth and fifth place. The scholarship awards are to be applied toward the students’ school-related expenses for the 2011-2012 academic year.

“Far too often, teenagers are universally portrayed as reckless when behind the wheel,” said Pierre Bize, president and CEO of CSE Insurance. “CSE Insurance is proud to support an effort showcasing bright young minds working toward the goal of making being on the road safer for everyone.”

To be eligible for the competition, a student must be attending his or her senior year of high school. The applicant must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and must have been accepted to an accredited two- or four-year college or university, or trade school, in the United States with intent to enroll as a full-time freshman by the Fall 2011 session.

Also, the applicant’s parent or legal guardian must be a currently-employed or retired full-time peace officer, firefighter, educator, postal employee, member of the military or other federal, state, or local government worker.

All submissions must be received by Friday, May 13, 2011.
