Oregon Sees 4 Workplace Fatalities in Q1 2011

April 25, 2011

Oregon recorded four compensable workplace fatalities in the first quarter of 2011, compared to seven compensable workplace fatalities for the same period in 2010. According to the Department of Consumer and Business Services, fatalities occurred in the agriculture, forestry, fishing and logging industry; construction industry; administrative support and waste management/remediation services industry; and state and local government.

Compensable fatalities are claims accepted by insurers arising from a fatal occupational injury or disease that entitles workers and/or their supervisors to compensation.

DCBS data excludes deaths of workers not subject to workers’ compensation coverage, such as those who are self-employed or work in Oregon for out-of-state employers, city of Portland police and fire employees, or federal employees.
