This is ridiculous. So if the person who is in this country illegally can’t pass the written test, we will assume that they won’t drive because they didn’t pass an exam. Really?????

What’s even more ridiculous is the suggestion that passing the written and driving tests mandated by the California DMV would make the roads safer. A trained monkey could get a driver license in California. Not even a well-trained monkey.

I agree really they won’t drive because they can’t pass a test…and if they do pass were is the guarantee they will get insurance…ridiculousness! Again everyone forgets the world illegal……..

Here’s a thought… Wouldn’t removing the illegal immigrants entirely provide a much more significant reduction in those costs than allowing them to obtain a driver’s license? Not to mention the improvement in the traffic congestion!!!

The immigrant community here in Texas actually come in to buy insurance even if they don’t have licenses. There is a major effort by non standard monthly carriers to write non licensed immigrants. Apparently very profitable. Many immigrants desire to be legal in license laws. I am amazed by their desire to get insurance coverage….to a degree, more desirous than our “legal”
    residents.

Agreed. I’ve spent a significant portion of my career in the non-standard auto world. I have no issues with allowing an immigrant to obtain a license and insurance. More power to them, and kudos for complying with the law of the land. My concern is with the “illegal” portion of the immigrant population, who obviously have no care for the rules, whether they govern citizenship or insurance.

The report NEVER says that it would be safer if illegal immigrants got licenses. What it says is that licensed drivers are safer than unlicensed drivers. The only recommendation the report makes is that unlicensed drivers should have their cars impounded. While it sounds logical that if you licensed drivers they would be safer the reality is they are not. Every person with a suspended or revoked license (all citizens or legal residents) at one time passed the drivers license test but in most cases they are terrible drivers. New Mexico issued licenses to all in 2003. Fatality rates increased and the percentage of insured drivers decreased.
