Alaska Workers’ Comp Board Seeks Ways To Reduce Costs

The Alaska Workers Compensation Board sought public input on rising costs in the last week.

Board members held public meetings in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Kenai and Juneau seeking comment on ways to stem rising costs.

The Alaska Journal of Commerce reported a study has determined Alaska has the highest insurance premium rates in the country. Costs last year were $270 million.

Officials say nearly 75 percent of total lost costs associated with benefit claims last year were associated with medical costs.

Division Director Mike Mongale says Alaska has disproportionately high specialty medicine rates, including treatments at physical therapists and chiropractors.

He says some states have implemented a fee schedule, which helps regulate what clinics and hospitals can charge.
