For decades now, folks have been building in areas where there is heavy brush-places outside of the flat easy to develop areas that were built up in the years prior to the 70’s. Once that building happened in earnest, you started to hear about more wildfires.
Simply put, there are many areas where people live because living in Ca is so popular that all the safe and easy places were taken long ago so they build where they shouldn’t
People start the fires by accident or on purpose-rarely is it by a lightning strike. And if the gov’t didn’t allow for development in places where it shouldn’t occur, then the brush fires would be few and far between.
This is actually a conversation we have had in the insurance industry going back well over 20 yrs. Way back before global warming was even a word or thought, before brush was mitigated and defensible space was understood by most people we were talking about the increased hazard of fires because in part environmental groups would not even as much let you rake a leaf. Seriously, allot could be prevented by clearing all those dead trees killed by bark beetles (over 140 Million) and mitigating some defensible space. Also there has been a massive growth of people and development into rural areas with further increases risk. So to say climate change is the sole culprit and yell the sky is falling is just wrong. You have to look at this holistically. There are allot of working parts here, not to mention most of these fire are man made whether intentionally or in-intentionally.
Central California has, for years, been a sort of “Dust Bowl” because environmentalist are trying to protect the Delta Smelt. The Delta Smelt is a very small fish that lives in one river. To save the fish, they had to stop diverting the water to irrigate the fields in central Ca. So, to save this one little fish, they turned most of California into a dry tinderbox.
