NMFTA’s SCAC Verified introduces identity verification and enhanced code validation to help reduce impersonation risk in trucking.
Alexandria, VA, March 3, 2026 — Freight fraud is no longer confined to long-haul trucking.
Service fleets, private carriers, and non-Class 8 operators—such as food and beverage distributors, uniform providers, cable and utility installers—are increasingly exposed to impersonation schemes, cargo diversion and identity misuse tied to carrier credentials.
To address this growing risk, the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc.® (NMFTA)™ is launching SCAC Verified™, strengthening the industry’s most widely used carrier identifier—the Standard Carrier Alpha Code® (SCAC™)—with enhanced verification controls.
As of February 26, 2026, non-Class 8 carriers will obtain and renew SCACs exclusively through NMFTA using a new identity verification process. The initiative includes:
- SCAC ID Verification at issuance and renewal to confirm code ownership.
- A rebranded SCAC Online® lookup tool to validate active SCACs in real time.
- Reduced reliance on third-party resellers for non-Class 8 fleets.
For insurers underwriting delivery fleets, route distributors, installation providers and private carriers, SCAC Verified adds a stronger layer of credential integrity—helping mitigate impersonation risk before it becomes a claim.
“Carrier identity controls are becoming foundational to freight fraud prevention,” said Joe Ohr, chief operating officer for NMFTA. “Insurers and brokers working with non-Class 8 fleets should understand how SCAC verification supports stronger operational controls.”
Insurance professionals working with private fleets and service operators are encouraged to advise policyholders to review their SCAC status and prepare for ID verification at renewal.
