Real World Smart

April 5, 2010

Madison Area Technical College’s motto is “Real world smart.” The goal of the Insurance Certificate Program is to serve as a gateway to insurance careers and to provide the industry a well-trained talent pool for entry-level staff. The Insurance Certificate addresses that need with a practical and thorough core curriculum that includes 10 credits introducing career options, technology, customer relations and an industry overview. From there, learners can choose an emphasis in either Property and Casualty or Life and Health, adding six credits in product knowledge and either claims, underwriting, risk management, service, or, yes, sales. The certificate utilizes technology to offer a combination of classroom and online learning for each class. As a result, a course can be completed anywhere from two weeks for licensing to seven weeks for a three-credit course.

The program is offered as a stand-alone certificate or as individual classes. Students in other degree areas are being encouraged to take a class as a complement to their education. In addition, local insurance professionals can take classes at the institute to continue their professional education and work toward industry designations.
