Lloyd’s Insurer ArgoGlobal Grabs O’Gorman from CNA to Lead Marine Team

August 22, 2016

ArgoGlobal, the Lloyd’s insurer and member of Argo Group, announced the appointment of Steve O’Gorman as head of Marine, effective Aug. 22.

He reports to Bruno Ritchie, director of underwriting and active underwriter.

The former head of Marine, Philip Thorpe-Apps, takes on an expanded position as global head of Marine and Energy.

O’Gorman brings more than three decades of marine insurance experience to ArgoGlobal. He joins from CNA Insurance where he served, most recently, as European underwriting director – Transport & Logistics. In this role, he was responsible for building and launching an underwriting department, which quickly grew to a team of nine underwriters writing over $20 million in premium. Prior to this, O’Gorman served as European underwriting director for the renewable energy department.

He began his insurance career in 1984 as a marine hull, cargo and liability broker at Sedgwick, progressing to associate director of the cargo division before joining CNA as a senior underwriter for marine cargo in 1997.

“Philip has been instrumental in building our marine account. As he takes on a more strategic role articulating the vision for our marine and energy offering globally, finding a successor to build on his accomplishments was a challenge,” said Ritchie.

“However, I am certain Steve has the managerial, commercial and underwriting acumen to maintain and accelerate the growth trajectory of our marine proposition. He brings an exceptional track record to ArgoGlobal and with his appointment we are now well placed to ensure our marine business continues to go from strength to strength despite the difficult market conditions,” he added.
