$91,000,000?? For an 87-YO person? That’s a lot of money for pain + suffering + loss of consortium. My parents aren’t too much younger so I feel the family’s pain, but seriously. I hope the appeal goes through and the number gets dropped to something realistic. Sorry, Tommy Boy needs to keep working.

Two thoughts. $91 mil is ridiculous and where was the family during this abuse? They too are ridiculous, but unfortunately, they will profit from their mother’s suffering.

I agree that no one should be treated that terrible. The family should have been there everyday. Not just for the 91Mil which is ridiculus..that is the reason for our country’s problems. 1 mil is alot for how the family left poor Mom alone. Close the place, lower the reward.

The lady went from being able to walk and talk to dead in 3 weeks…because they apparently didn’t feed her. She lost 15 lbs in 3 weeks. The nursing home reported an employee turnover rate of 112%, the parent company owns 7 nursing homes in WV and all but one of them received 1 of 5 stars from the Medicaid ranking system. I don’t really know how much money is appropriate to give the family, but i do know the nursing home should be closed forever.

The unfortunate part is that with earnings of $4bil, this award doesn’t appear to be much of a spanking for the owner.

I can understand why she was inacapable of picking up the phone and complaining to her family about the lousy food, inattentive aides, etc. But seriously, where was her family in that critical three-week period? Were they relieved by her not being at home with them, which with an alzheimer’s case must be difficult? You would have thought they’d have visited her at some point, especially if they were trying to get her a transfer to a better / closer facility.

The website for the home actually looks / reads pretty well. My guess is that they will keep on serving their market, which might slide a little, but still service whatever niche they wind up in.

Whether you think the family should have visited the woman or not is irrelevant to whether the nursing home was negligent. They exist ONLY to provide care to the elderly which they most certainly did not do. $91 million excessive? Maybe. But they should close the place.

Rather than fine them, isn’t there some other way to penalize them.

Have the owners visit and feed the clients everyday. Require the owners to hire more employees per the # of clients.

The people who benefit from this award are the family (who didn’t visit) and the lawyers.

The people in the NH will have to find a new place to live, as it will be closed, maybe a good thing.

There was LOTS of discussion about this on IJ when the ruling initially came out, so I’m not going to rehash it.

Poor Mother , family should be ashamed for not being there. $91-Mil is totally rediculus! The home should be shut down, or hire way more nurses to help. The country has no money and lawsuits like this help things get worse. I mil would be too much for this family. Shame on them, I spent the last 3 yrs taking care of my Dad in his home with a private asst. He did well because of the love, and food we made sure he got even when he could not eat. FL person tired of these lawsuits for lawyers
