Under an agreement signed with the state of Texas, 27 other states and the District of Columbia, Chevron Products Co. will take a leading role in preventing the sale of tobacco to minors, according to the Texas Attorney General’s office.
The agreement will impact over 9,300 stores nationwide. Chevron will begin a comprehensive employee-training program to ensure that no minors purchase tobacco products. The agreement prohibits Chevron from displaying self-serve tobacco kiosks, vending machines, free samples and cigarette look-alike products. Texas has secured similar agreements with other companies, such as CVS Pharmacy, Conoco Phillips 7-Eleven, Wal-Mart, BP Amoco, Walgreen Stores and Exxon Mobil.
Studies show more than 80 percent of adult smokers began smoking as children and 2,000 children start smoking everyday. Some 400,000 Americans die each year from diseases caused by tobacco use.
