Massachusetts’ Ex-Regulator Joins Narragansett Bay

March 9, 2009

Julianne Bowler, former commissioner of the Massachusetts Division of Insurance, has joined Pawtucket, Rhode Island-based Narragansett Bay Insurance Co. as a senior consultant for corporate and strategic initiatives.

Bowler served as commissioner from 2002 to 2007. While commissioner, she established revised corporate governance tools designed to improve insurer solvency and implemented a online producer registration system.

As commissioner, she oversaw regulation, solvency and market stability of 100 domestic insurance companies, 1,500 licenses companies, and 70,000 insurance producers.

Narragansett Bay said Bowler’s experience in compliance, corporate governance and insurance regulation will be a major benefit to the company as it builds its presence along the Eastern seaboard – particularly in the specialty homeowner’s market.

“Her affiliation with our company fits precisely with our objective of bringing on board outstanding people with technical leadership,” said Nick Steffey, chairman and CEO of Narragansett Bay. “Julie Bowler has developed an outstanding reputation in the insurance industry with her regulatory peers, the companies and agencies she regulated as well as the reinsurers who support them.”

In addition to her work with Narragansett Bay, Bowler sits on the boards of Atlantic Charter Insurance Co., Senior Health Insurance Co. of Pennsylvania and RTI Biologics.
