The number of Atlantic hurricanes that came ashore the U.S. this past storm season, a season that turned out to be the quietest since 2006. Since June, just nine named storms developed. Only three of them became hurricanes, and those stayed out at sea or weakened before passing over land. Two tropical storms made landfall in the U.S., bringing mostly rain and some beach erosion.

The workers’ compensation insurance rate hike in California in 2010, according to the Department of Insurance. The rate announcement came a month after the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Bureau had asked for but was denied a 23 percent increase.

Officials maintain that the company intentionally undervalued the liabilities and underpriced the premiums for employers to win their business. The Bermuda-based company has denied any wrongdoing.

The number of natural disasters in the world this year, the fewest number in a decade, according to a United Nations report. Of the 245 disasters, 224 were weather-related and accounted for 7,000 deaths out of the 8,900. The weather-related deaths, which exclude geological events such as earthquakes and volcanoes, caused $15 billion in damages, out of a total of $19 billion.
