Only three of them became hurricanes, and those stayed out at sea or weakened before passing over land. Two tropical storms made landfall in the U.S., bringing mostly rain and some beach erosion.

The number of natural disasters in the world this year, the fewest number in a decade, according to a United Nations report. Of the 245 disasters, 224 were weather-related and accounted for 7,000 deaths out of the 8,900. The weather-related deaths, which exclude geological events such as earthquakes and volcanoes, caused $15 billion in damages, out of a total of $19 billion.
