Starting February 1, Nevada motorists are required to present proof of insurance at the Department of Motor Vehicles when registering a vehicle for the first time. To assist Nevadans who might not be aware of this new requirement, Insurance Commissioner Scott Kipper has asked all insurers and appointed agents to advise their customers of this change when issuing Evidence of Insurance ID cards to their insureds.
DMV representatives also will ask to see Nevada Evidence of Insurance ID cards at renewals, registration reinstatements and license plate changes.
The new requirement is part of a DMV program to cut down on uninsured motorists by capturing insurance information at the time of registration and providing instant validation. The program, Nevada Liability Insurance Validation Electronically (NV LIVE), is the result of more than a year of planning by the DMV, with cooperative efforts from the Nevada Division of Insurance and the members of the insurance industry.
“NV LIVE is going to be a great tool for getting uninsured motorists off the road,” Commissioner Kipper said. “At this time, we would like to ask both the insurers and appointed agents doing business in this state to join us in making sure Nevadans are prepared for the change.”
Nevada law requires that motorists maintain continuous liability coverage on every vehicle registered in the state. Motorists must also keep an Evidence of Insurance card in their vehicle at all times and present it to any law enforcement officer upon request.
