Kentucky Court Upholds Safety Law for Amish

The Kentucky Supreme Court has upheld a state law requiring an Amish sect to post orange safety triangles on their buggies, although the ruling is irrelevant because lawmakers changed the law earlier this year.

The high court’s decision also let stand the convictions of several Amish men who challenged the law.

The Amish men had asked for a religious exemption from using the orange triangles. The Amish sect prohibits the use of the vehicle sign because they say the color is gaudy and they depend on God, and not manmade symbols, for their safety. The new law allows them to use gray or reflective tape instead.
