Larry Ollison, a former member of the rock band The Platters, pled guilty of one felony count of insurance fraud.
According to CDI fraud investigators, the 50-year-old Stockton man filed roughly 22 false claims with Republic Western Insurance between February 1996 and November 1999. His fraudulent scheme involved rental cars, rented U-Haul trucks, falsified documents and staged collisions.
Ollison would rent a U-Haul truck (under his own name) and a car (using an alias), stage a collision of the two and file an accident claim with U-Haul carrier Republic Western. In the claim, he would use the rental car alias as the party involved in the collision.
By purchasing a damage waiver for the rental, Ollison knew he would be covered for accidents. He would return the rental car and report that the car had been damaged by a hit-and-run driver. By endorsing the check Republic Western issued with the name of the payee and his own name, Ollison was able to cash the check and defraud the insurance company.
The fraudulent claims resulted in more than $100,000 in claims paid out.
