The number of levees nationwide that are at risk for failing, according to the Army Corps of Engineers. Twenty-seven states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico had threatened levees, but only two had more than a handful. California led the list with 37 and Washington state had 19. Only one state in the South Central region — Arkansas — had levees that were deemed at risk. According to the Corps, the Memphis/White River Levees/Augusta to Clarendon segment and the Little Rock/Conway County Levee District No. 8/Conway County Levee No. 8 made the list. The list did not include any levees in Louisiana.

The number of people who have been charged in Oklahoma in an investigation of an alleged identity theft crime ring, according to the office of state Attorney General Drew Edmondson’s office. Scott Richard Poor was charged in Oklahoma County District Court with one count of obtaining property by trick or deception. He was charged after an ongoing investigation revealed he used stolen credit card information to set up an account and make numerous purchases from Advance Auto Parts in Oklahoma City. The credit card information he used is that of a Florida couple, who stayed in two hotels in the Oklahoma City area late last year. Charges were filed Dec. 20 against five individuals believed to be a part of the scam. Previously charged are: Daniel Lee Lavender, one count of attempting to obtain property by trick or deception; Scott C. Cameron, one felony count of obtaining property by trick or deception; Allen Dell Wooden, two felony counts of obtaining property by trick or deception; Ryan Anthony Anderson, two felony counts and one misdemeanor count of obtaining property by trick or deception and Forrest C. Kennedy, three felony counts and one misdemeanor count of obtaining property by trick or deception.

The annual statewide average cost for a homeowners insurance policy in Texas for 2006. This amount represents a 4.9 percent decrease from 2005 and 5.8 percent decrease from 2004. Texas may now have fallen second to Florida for having the highest homeowners rates in the country, according to the Insurance Council of Texas. For the second year in a row, homeowners and automobile insurance premiums in Texas have dropped on a statewide average basis. Home-owner rates in Florida have been increasing, the ICT said. The annual statewide average cost for an automobile insurance policy for liability and physical damage coverage in Texas for 2006 was $1,054. This represents a 4.4 percent decrease from 2005 and a 9.3 percent decrease from 2004.

The number of counties in Oklahoma approved by the federal government for public disaster assistance as of Feb. 2, a result of ice and snow storms that blanketed the state in mid-January. Gov. Brad Henry had requested for federal disaster declarations for 23 counties. The counties approved for assistance are: Adair, Atoka, Bryan, Cherokee, Coal, Cotton, Craig, Delaware, Haskell, Hughes, Johnston, Latimer, Mayes, McIntosh, Muskogee, Okfuskee, Okmul-gee, Ottawa, Pittsburg, Seminole, Sequoyah and Wagoner. FEMA issued the same declaration for Beaver, Cimarron and Texas counties in the Oklahoma Panhandle for damage suffered during a snowstorm from Dec. 28-30. Of the 23 counties in the governor’s disaster declaration request for the January storms, all but Choctaw County have been approved, Henry said.
