$497 Million

Estimated value of the claims for personal injury, property damage and wrongful death due to a construction crane collapse on Manhattan’s East Side on March 15, according to New York City’s comptroller. Seven people died when the tower crane fell and crushed a midtown apartment building on East 51st Street; more than 10 were injured. At least 46 claims have been filed related to the accident.

$25 Million

Amount of settlement reached with a New Jersey packaging company and survivors and relatives of those killed in the 2003 fire at The Station nightclub in Rhode Island. The settlement with Sealed Air Corp. is the latest in a series stemming from the blaze, which began when pyrotechnics used by the rock band Great White ignited flammable soundproofing on the club’s walls. So far, settlements in the case total $150 million.

Amount paid to the family of one of two women killed when a D.C. bus struck them as they crossed Pennsylvania Avenue in February 2007. The Metrobus driver was sentenced to a year in jail in December for his role in the accident.

Value of damage caused by a fire at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The blaze took roughly 90 minutes to bring under control. About $750,000 of damage was caused to the building; about $250,000 was for contents. The cause of the fire is unclear, although a fire marshal ruled it accidental.

Number of people arrested by police in New York in an accident-staging scam that allegedly resulted in thousands of dollars’ worth of unnecessary medical treatment at four Bronx clinics. The 13 people have been charged with insurance fraud and grand larceny, stemming from at least five wrecks. Two suspects remain at large. Police say the ring targeted car insurance companies, taking advantage of a state law that entitles people involved in a crash to $50,000 worth of medical benefits.
