The assessment covers outstanding claims that originated during the state’s devastating 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons. A senior officer of the Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund said there is a $625 million shortfall that personal and commercial policyholders across Florida will collectively shoulder.

The number of mobile homes damaged in a June 8 storm that spawned a “possible tornado,” according to Florida officials. The storm moved through northern Lee County. North Fort Myers Fire Chief Terry Pye said at least eight homes were heavily damaged, and at least 40 more had minor damage.

A jury was selected June 17 in the trial against drug companies Novartis Pharmaceuticals and SmithKline Beecham Corp. before Montgomery County Circuit Judge Charles Price. In the first trial in February, a state court jury awarded the state $215 million in its Medicaid drug price fraud case against AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP.

The amount the Mississippi Supreme Court ruled a Hinds County insurance broker, Shappley Harris, must repay the county for making changes in invoices from the Mississippi Municipal Association between 2002 and 2003. The county said the changes increased the cost of the premium for workers compensation insurance.

The volume of water per hour firefighters pumped from two lakes on June 16 to saturate a huge wildfire in eastern North Carolina that has burned for more than two weeks. The fire, started by a lightning strike on private land, began June 1 in the peat soil around Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. At the time, the 41,000-acre fire was only 40 percent contained.
