The Louisiana Department of Insurance is waiving Continuing Education (CE) requirements for insurance agents and brokers actively serving the United States as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Any insurance license renewal late fees incurred by those military personnel will be waived as well. Insurance Commissioner Robert Wooley said it was the least the department could “do to support those who have disrupted their daily lives to fight in defense of the freedoms we enjoy in this country.” He said that licensees may notify the department of Insurance of their need for a waiver when they complete their tour of duty. The only documentation they will need is a copy of their orders of separation from active duty. Because the department is not notified in advance of the activation of military personnel, some licensees may receive notices of suspension. Their records will be corrected upon notice and proof of activation. A number of other states are issuing similar waivers of licensing requirements for their producers who have been called up and that the industry’s national membership organization, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), strongly supports the effort.
