Airbnb’s host and guest protections now include host damage protection, host liability insurance, and liability insurance for its Airbnb Experience customers. The coverages are now combined as part of an overall package called AirCover, which also includes income loss protection, pet damage protection, deep cleaning protection, and other features.
There is no cost to Airbnb hosts for the insurance programs, according to the firm.
In most jurisdictions, the insurance is provided through a policy issued by Zurich Insurance or a local Zurich Insurance partner company. Policies may also issued by different insurance companies in the United States, Japan and China as placed by Airbnb UK Services Limited in the United Kingdom, an appointed representative of Aon UK Limited, as follows:
- In the United States, coverage is provided by Generali US Branch or Assicurazioni Generali SpA.
- In Japan, coverage is provided by Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance Inc.
- In China, coverage is provided by the People’s Insurance Company of China as part of the China Host Protection Plan.
Liability limits are $1,000,000 USD each occurrence with a total limit available per host property of USD $1,000,000. Different coverage limits and terms may apply depending on the jurisdiction.
The Airbnb Host liability insurance program (HLI) insures hosts for their legal liability for bodily injury or property damage to guests or others resulting from an event that happens during a guest’s Airbnb stay at the host’s accommodation. Hosts have the option to make a claim first under the HLI program instead of their own insurance policy as long as the host’s own insurance policy allows them to do so.
Airbnb Experiences are in-person or online activities hosted by local experts. Hosts earn money while sharing a hobby, skill, or expertise with the Airbnb community. The Experiences liability insurance program (ELI) insures Experience hosts for their legal liability for bodily injury or property damage to guests or others resulting from an event that happens during a guest’s participation in an Airbnb Experience. The ELI program only insures hosts for their liability to others, so injury to the Experience host, or damage or loss to their own property, is not covered.
