Middlesex Mutual, Holyoke Mutual Launch Joint Brand: MiddleOak

October 5, 2006

Holyoke Mutual Insurance Company, founded in 1843, and Middlesex Mutual Assurance Company, established in 1836, are writing another chapter in their history book with the announcement of their new group brand name: MiddleOak.

“The MiddleOak logo brings two companies that have been operating together for a long time under an umbrella brand, and signifies a new chapter in an organization that’s on the move,” said Gary Vallo, chief executive officer.

The MiddleOak group brand name will introduce two sub-brands: MiddleOak (personal and business insurance products) and MiddleOak Specialty (specialty products).

The MiddleOak core product line provides personal, business and commercial insurance including auto, home, fire, umbrella, flood and watercraft insurance.

The specialty line, launched five years ago to aggressively develop and bring innovative personal and commercial coverages to market, carries the MiddleOak Specialty moniker. These specialty products include the Restorationist for historic pre-1930 homes.

“While our logos and look have changed, what brings us together remains the same: a shared set of enduring core values,” said Vallo. “This brand will be a strong competitive advantage as we achieve market leadership by innovating and doing the right thing.”

The insurance companies in the MiddleOak group are: Holyoke Mutual Insurance Company in Salem, Mass. and Middlesex Mutual Assurance Company.

The MiddleOak companies partner with 1,100 independent agents in 22 states plus the District of Columbia. In 2005, the underwriting companies had $256 million in written premium with $309 million projected for 2006. The company expects to be nationwide within the next five years.

Middlesex Mutual Assurance Co. formed an alliance with Country Insurance & Financial Services in May 1998, followed by Holyoke Mutual Insurance Co. in Salem in January 2000. This alliance allows the companies to spread geographic reach and increase financial strength, and to share resources and knowledge.
