Frederick County, Md. Commissioner Charles Jenkins is calling for penalties for local businesses that hire illegal immigrants.
He is talking to the county attorney about a plan to audit local businesses that receive building permits from the county. Under his proposal, businesses that use illegal workers could be fined and the workers would be fired.
Jenkins expects to introduce formal legislation by early next month. Some area builders say, however, there are already laws in place to prohibit the hiring of illegal workers.
A recent proposal by Jenkins to end some county services to illegal immigrants was defeated by the County Commissioners.
