Elizabeth “Beth” Sammis has been appointed Interim Maryland Insurance Commissioner, overseeing the regulation of Maryland’s $26 billion insurance industry.
Sammis has served as deputy commissioner for the Maryland Insurance Administration since 2007 focusing on legislative and regulatory policy, with an emphasis on health insurance. She replaces Ralph S. Tyler, who took the position of chief legal counsel to the federal Food and Drug Administration.
“Beth has been an extraordinary partner during my time as Commissioner,” former Commissioner Tyler said. “She has lead the effort to bring a sharper focus to the agency’s mission of protecting consumers. Her expertise in health insurance will be a great asset to the state as the state prepares to implement federal health reform legislation.”
In her role as deputy commissioner, Sammis identifies regulatory gaps and recommends policy direction for health insurance matters. Prior to her appointment as deputy commissioner, she served as vice president of government affairs for United Healthcare for the Mid-Atlantic region.
