Connecticut officials are notifying 11,000 residents who applied for state rebates after purchasing energy efficient furnaces that their personal information may have been stolen.
Robert Genuario, secretary of the state’s Office of Policy and Management, says Hartford Police notified his office on Friday that a one-time temporary worker is suspected of attempting to use personal information from at least one person who applied for a rebate.
Genuario says the theft was ultimately not carried out.
The Furnace Replacement Rebate Program ran from August 2008 to March 10. Rebates of up to $500 were provided to qualified applicants.
The state is hiring a personal identify theft protection service to help those affected.
