A lawyer from a well-known Massachusetts personal injury firm who was convicted of insurance fraud will be allowed to practice law again.
The state’s highest court on Thursday reinstated the law license of Nicholas Ellis.
Ellis, who was a partner at the Worcester firm of Ellis & Ellis, was disbarred after pleading guilty in 2000 to two counts of motor vehicle insurance fraud. Several other attorneys at the firm, a chiropractor and a doctor were also charged.
Ellis was sentenced to six months in jail.
The Supreme Judicial Court noted in its ruling that Ellis was a young lawyer at a firm run his father and brother when he committed insurance fraud. The SJC said Ellis has rehabilitated himself during his disbarment by participating in charitable activities, coaching youth sports teams and being a stay-at-home father.
