The Virginia Farm Bureau is warning motorists to be mindful of deer wandering onto roads and highways, a common hazard during this time of year.
The Farm Bureau should know. It says Virginia is among the top 10 states in the nation for deer-related collisions. Virginia Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Co. handled more than 3,000 claims in 2010, with an average loss per claim topping $2,100.
The Farm Bureau says the months of October, November and December record the most deer-vehicle encounters.
Nationally, about 150 deaths and $4.6 billion in insurance claims annually are related to those collisions.
