Groups concerned about the safety of Dominion’s North Anna Nuclear Power Station are asking federal regulators to reevaluate their decision to allow the plant to restart.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Monday heard comments from nuclear power watchdogs, consumer advocates and environmental groups.
The groups filed an emergency petition in October asking the NRC to make sure all proper safety evaluations are done following the plant’s automatic shutdown during the Aug. 23 earthquake.
The units shut down when the 5.8-magnitude quake caused peak ground movement about twice the level for which it was designed.
Multiple inspections show the plant about 11 miles from the earthquake’s epicenter didn’t suffer any functional damage during the temblor.
Federal regulators gave the company the go-ahead to restart the reactors on Nov. 11.
