A western Pennsylvania woman will stand trial on charges she fraudulently applied online to insure her daughter’s car less than an hour after an accident, and then had her daughter to lie about the time of the crash.
Forty-two-year-old Heidi Schmidt, of Cecil Township, was ordered to trial after waiving her right to a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, Jan. 4.
Authorities say Schmidt’s daughter crashed at 12:48 a.m. on Christmas Day, 2010 after falling asleep at the wheel. Authorities say Schmidt applied for Geico insurance online about a half hour later and paid for it using an online check. Schmidt then allegedly had her daughter lie that the crash happened about 2 a.m.
The Observer-Reporter of Washington, Pa. reported on Friday that claim was denied. Police say the woman’s car insurance had lapsed about a month earlier due to nonpayment.
