New York Teen With Cerebral Palsy Wins Multi-Million Dollar Lawsuit

August 27, 2012

The family of a Staten Island teen suffering from cerebral palsy won a multi-million dollar lawsuit filed against the hospital where the girl was born.

The New York Post reports the family of Stephanie Debes won the suit last Friday. The family claimed in the suit that the 17-year-old and her twin sister were born three months early at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. The family attorney says that Stephanie suffered a brain injury resulting in cerebral palsy. Her sister Amanda was uninjured.

A Staten Island Supreme Court jury found that hospital staff failed to recognize early labor contractions and didn’t prevent premature delivery. The hospital was liable for about $77 million, but the lawyer says the family will receive less because the hospital went bankrupt in 2010.
