I think it would be interesting to see how people deal with this over the long term. I imagine that for the first few months, people’s driving habits would improve and then gradually get worse again as they forget about that little device under the dashboard.

I wonder if the typical driver could improve their driving habits long enough to obtain the discount.

my first thought: can a driver’s rate increase as a result of reckless driving habits? if so, is it worth the risk for the insured to agree to use the device?

I believe that it is a discount only and you cannot be surcharged for bad driving at this time.

Big question is how the insurance company shares the information found.

If on a 50 mph speed limit road someone goes 55 mph. will they report him to DMV and will driver get a ticket???????????

I work for Allstate and can tell you that is NOT the case. The only thing bad driving can do is reduce the DriveWise discount, but it won’t affect your premiums in any other way. I have it installed on my own car and my discount at the next renewal looks like itll be about 24%, up from the original 10%. Hope it helps!

Appreciate it. Out of curiosity, do you see people’s driving habits general improve over time, start off good then slowly get worse, or stay the same?

I wonder if the information is used for a claim? Will they use it to help determine fault? If they show you were speeding when the accident happened, etc. will that be used against the policyholder? Anytime someone is collecting more information I always wonder what they do with it all and will the information they collect be used for other things. Can a plaintiff’s attorney get those records to show you routinely speed or don’t stop a stop signs?

How is an onboard device going to know when you drive through an intersection with a stop sign? For that matter, how is an onboard device going to know the speed limit for the section of road on which you’re driving?

I am fairly certain these devices are linked to tracking software so they know when and where you are driving. That way they know you are driving on busier roads, businer times of day, etc.. It isn’t hard to see that a car is on a freeway or at an intersection and to know what the speed limits are or where there are lights or signs.
