New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said yesterday that 90 percent of Long Island utility customers were without electricity after Sandy ravaged the New York City metropolitan area.
He also says hundreds of lives were saved by New York City police, state police, National Guard soldiers and other first responders.
Cuomo says the rebuilding process must include far greater protections against what he said has become more common extreme weather.
He says no weather pattern can shock him now.
He says John F. Kennedy International Airport. LaGuardia Airport will remain closed because of extensive damage. Buses resumed a limited schedule at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Cuomo was speaking with President Barack Obama Tuesday morning about emergency funding and other help with recovery work.
