Thunderstorms Down Trees, Power Lines in Delaware

Thunderstorms with large hail knocked down trees, flooded roads and left thousands in the dark in New Castle County in Delaware.

As many as 11,000 customers lost power Monday night after the storms blew through the region. By Tuesday morning Delmarva Power reported that power had been restored to all but 1,500 in New Castle County, Del., and 300 in Kent County, Md.

The National Weather Service reported 3/4-inch hail fell in Bear and Newark on Monday night.

The Delaware Department of Transportation reports that fallen trees closed several roads but most have been reopened.

Meanwhile, residents of New Hampshire’s Seacoast region and southwestern Maine face some big cleanup as a result of a fast-moving storm that pummeled the region with rain, high winds and hail.

The Portsmouth Herald reports that Monday’s storm raced through the region, taking down trees and power lines and leaving about 4,000 utility customers without power. Winds were measured at more than 60 mph.

First responders were called out to multiple reports of downed trees and power lines during the storm, which pounded the area for about 45 minutes in the late Monday afternoon.

In Kittery, Maine, police and fire crews were called to the scene of a tree that caught on fire due to downed power lines.
