New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan is appealing FEMA’s decision to deny an extension for towns’ snow-removal efforts following a blizzard in January.
In March, a disaster declaration was approved for the state, ordering federal aid to help recovery efforts in Hillsborough, Rockingham and Strafford counties affected by the storm Jan. 26 to 28. Some areas got up to 32 inches of snow.
FEMA granted Hassan’s request to extend the time period for removing snow from roofs, but denied her request for an extended timeframe to support snow removal from congested downtowns beyond the two days.
Hassan said additional weather patterns occurring through Feb. 22 required an unprecedented response by towns. She said they hadn’t yet completed removal of snow from Jan. 26-28 prior to additional snowfall brought in by later storms.
