Delaware Gov. Markell, Education Officials Tout Statewide School Safety Efforts

September 25, 2015

Delaware officials are celebrating the completion of a statewide effort to improve safety in public schools.

Delaware Gov. Jack Markell joined education and law enforcement officials Tuesday to recognize the completion of comprehensive safety plans across Delaware’s school system.

Officials say this school year is the first in which every Delaware public school that was in operation as of last year has a comprehensive safety plan in place.

Those plans are aimed at preparing school officials, law enforcement and first responders for potential emergency situations, ranging from armed intruders to natural disasters.

Markell signed the Omnibus School Safety Act in 2012, making Delaware the first state in the country to establish a formal statewide framework for comprehensive school safety plans, bringing all public schools under one common safety protocol.
