From broccoli to the board room, Lance Smith has cultivated a reputation for collaboration, hard work and common sense.

A partner in Smith’s Farm, the largest producer of broccoli and one of the largest growers of cauliflower in the East, Smith has become the sixth chair of the MEMIC Board of Directors.

Headquartered in Presque Isle, Smith’s Farm cultivates more than 8,000 acres of farmland between Maine and Florida. It’s a family-owned business that has been operating since 1859.

He succeeds David Labbe of Kittery Trading Post, who was one of the founding board members of MEMIC.

The MEMIC Group includes MEMIC Indemnity Company, MEMIC Casualty Company and parent company Maine Employers’ Mutual Insurance Company. As a super-regional workers’ compensation specialty insurer, The MEMIC Group holds licenses to write workers’ compensation across the country. The group maintains offices in Manchester, N.H.; Glastonbury, Conn.; Albany, N.Y.; Weehawken, N.J.; West Conshohocken, Penn.; Tysons Corner, Va.; and Tampa, Fla.; in addition to its headquarters in Portland, Maine.
