The National Hurricane Center in Miami continued its “Tropical Storm Warning,” as “Claudette,” the third named Atlantic storm of the season continues to move west through the Gulf of Mexico towards the Yucatan Peninsula.
The NHC said a “Tropical Storm Warning and a Hurricane Watch are in effect for the Yucatan Peninsula from Chetumal to Cabo Catoche Mexico,” and a Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Grand Cayman, while a “Tropical Storm Watch” is in effect for Little Cayman and Cayman Brac.
The storm’s center is currently located about 195 miles south-southwest of Grand Cayman, and is moving “just North of due Westward” at around 20 mph, across a range of around 160 miles. Maximum sustained winds are around 60 mph with stronger gusts. The NHS said it expects to see little change in strength during the next 24 hours.
The bulletin warned that “above normal tides accompanied by dangerous waves may be occurring along the South Coast of the Cayman Islands and are subsiding along the South Coast of Jamaica. Storm total rainfalls of 3 to 6 inches are likely in association with Claudette. Rainbands are spreading over the Cayman Islands and portions of Cuba. Weather conditions are improving in Jamaica.”
