CII Notes Agenda for Annual Conference

August 30, 2004

The U.K.’s Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) will focus on the future for brokers when it convenes its annual Insurance & Financial Services Conference at the Convention Centre in Birmingham the 29 September to 1 October.

Delegates in general and brokers in particular will “be able to get to grips with the myriad of changes required in order to remain profitable in the future,” said the CII bulletin.

It noted: “In order to bring brokers up to speed with current thinking on the anticipated state of the UK market post FSA the CII is holding two key sessions focusing on issues such as regulation, consumer attitudes and the emergence of new distributors. ‘The professional broker’ breakout session (30 September) will be hosted by Mark Cliff of AXA and will involve the two panelists – Grant Ellis (Broker Network) and Chris Giles (Giles Insurance) – addressing issues facing the individual broker in presentations which will give their short, medium and long term visions of professional broking, followed by discussion.

“The panel session, “Broking in the new order” (1 October), hosted by Andy Homer, will encourage debate on the current and future business environment for brokers. It will aim to provide delegates with the views and perspectives of the panelists which include Eric Galbraith (BIBA), Pierre Lefevre (Groupama), Carl Bach (ACE), Toby Foster (Marsh), David Slade (Perkins & Slade) and Paul Meehan (Smart & Cooke).”

Steve Wellard, Marketing Director of the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), commented: “We want brokers to come away from these sessions with a renewed confidence in their future. We hope to show how perceived burdens, such as regulation and increased competition, are actually great opportunities for the broking community. Brokers who attend can expect to gain an incredible amount of insight which will help them keep their businesses strong.”

Some of the questions being addressed during the sessions include “how the broking community can survive threats such as harsh regulation, declining industry reputation and the forgotten value of independent advice. Leading and successful figures from the industry will be providing their own personal insights and advice to delegates to arm them with the vision to succeed,” the announcement continued.

“The calibre of the speakers, and content at the conference, is such that we consider brokers who want to thrive in today’s market, simply cannot afford to miss it,” Wellard added.

Brokers can register for the conference on the CII Web site at: www.conference.cii.co.uk or by calling 020 8332 7696.
