A last gasp tropical storm – Gamma, the 24th of the record-breaking 2005 Atlantic hurricane season – has caused flooding and mudslides in Honduras. Although no deaths have been reported, a total of 18 people have been reported missing, including five fishermen, who are unaccounted for after their boat capsized.
News reports indicated that more than 5,000 people have been evacuated and roads and bridges have been damaged or destroyed leaving several cities and towns isolated.
Gamma was centered about 215 miles (345 kms) east-southeast of Belize City and 45 miles (70 kms) north-east of Limon, Honduras on Saturday afternoon, local time.
Miami’s National Hurricane Center, which has been tracking the storm for over a week, said it has been downgraded to a tropical depression as it drifts northward. It is expected to dissipate within the next 24 hours, and currently poses no threat the U.S. mainland.
