AIG Promotes Mucerino, Thomas, Portalatin, Baugh at International Unit

American International Underwriters (AIU), the ), the international property/casualty insurance organization of American International Group, Inc. (AIG), announced a number of executive appointments.

Ralph Mucerino, senior vice president of American International Group, Inc. and president, AIG Global Marine & Energy, has been named to the additional post of chief operating officer of AIU. Mucerino began his career with AIG in 1979 and has held numerous management positions of increasing responsibility. In addition to senior underwriting and marketing roles in both the domestic and foreign businesses of AIG, he has served as regional President for operations in Africa and the Middle East, Regional president for the Far East Division, and president of Global Marine and Energy. He was named an AIG vice president in 2005 and a senior vice president of AIG in 2008.

Robert J. Thomas will assume the position of president of the Commercial Lines Division. Thomas is a 30-year veteran of AIG, and was based overseas for 22 years, with close to 20 years in AIG’s Asian operations. He has held various executive positions with AIU including regional president for SEA/China, regional president for MEMSA, and head of the Life Business for AIA in China. He is a vice president of American International Group, Inc. and most recently was executive vice president of Corporate Accounts Practice of AIU.

Julio Portalatin, senior vice president of American International Group, Inc. and president of AIG Europe, SA and president of AIU’s Continental European Region, has been appointed to the additional post of chief executive officer, European Region. Portalatin joined AIG in 1993. Prior to his current role, he served in a number of executive positions including president of AIU Accident and Health Division, president of AIU Personal Lines Division, and AIU Latin America Division regional vice president and general manager of Seguros Interamericana, S.A.

Alexander Baugh, vice president of American International Group, Inc. and managing director of AIG UK Limited and regional president of Foreign General’s UK/Ireland Division, has been appointed to the additional post of chief executive officer AIG UK Limited. Baugh has over 25 years of experience within AIG, originally joining AIU in 1983 as a financial lines underwriter. He subsequently held a succession of senior positions with AIU in New York, London and Paris, and was most recently Regional President for Europe. He has also held several positions in AIG’s Commercial Insurance area which serves the U.S. market.

All report to Nicholas C. Walsh, president and CEO of AIU.

AIU is a network of international general insurance companies that works with its U.S. counterpart, Commercial Insurance (CI), to market property/casualty products to both consumer and commercial clients.
