Hastings Joins Markel’s Professional, Financial Risks Unit; Replaces Retired Armes

March 12, 2013

James Hastings has been appointed managing director of Markel International’s professional and financial risks division in London. He replaces David Armes, who retired in December 2012 after more than 10 years with Markel.

James joins Markel from QBE Insurance (Europe) where he has worked since 2005. In his most recent role he was an underwriting manager within the professional and financial lines division. James was leading the specialist technology, media and telecommunications unit that he helped create in 2010.

Prior to that, Hastings was a senior professional indemnity underwriter managing large and complex risks for both QBE syndicates and insurance company. He has also worked for Hiscox as a professional indemnity, financial lines and commercial underwriter. Hastings began his career with The Equitable Life Assurance Soicety.

James will lead a division of some 20 underwriters and support staff who cover specialist professional and financial risk products including professional indemnity, directors and officers, crime, general liability, and intellectual property.

Patrick White will continue in his current role as deputy divisional managing director.
