Fidelis Appoints Symms from Talbot as Head of Outwards Reinsurance

January 27, 2020

Fidelis Insurance announced the appointment of John Symms as head of Outwards Reinsurance, in a new role that will support the growth of company’s reinsurance partnerships and the increasingly important quota share relationships across multiple lines of business.

Working closely with Phil Vandoninck in his role as CEO of Socium, Fidelis’ partnerships pillar, Symms will coordinate all aspects of engagement with reinsurers across all segments of the business.

Previously, he placed and managed outwards reinsurance at Talbot where he worked for 16 years. Before Talbot he was at Reliance National for 10 years, where he was an underwriter and bought and managed reinsurance.

“Fidelis sets great value on its reinsurance relationships and this appointment is a demonstration of our commitment to provide best in class service and transparency to our partners,” commented Richard Brindle, chairman and group chief executive officer of Fidelis. “John will work alongside Phil Vandoninck and our underwriting, actuarial and analytics teams to ensure we provide excellent support to our brokers and reinsurers.”

Vandoninck noted: “Fidelis has a large number of reinsurance partners over 20 classes of business. This requires us to focus resources on the entire outwards process from broker and counterparty selection to placement and reporting. John’s extensive experience and relationships can only help us to develop further and offer a better service to our reinsurers.”
